    The Library

In 1919, Austin B. Fletcher purchased our building at 257 Main Street, as a memorial to his mother, Harriet, and to his aunt, Eliza Durkee, who had wished to donate her smaller home for a library building. By 1924, the Italian style Victorian building was in operation as the town's library. Although updated to serve as a modern facility, Fletcher Memorial still retains much of its period charm. A circulating library with a fine selection of both popular and literary fiction and nonfiction, the library has a charming children's room, a young adult section, large print books, and audio books and DVD's. New selections are posted on our facebook page as they come in.

It also has two special collections: the Jamie H. Trecker Comics collection, featuring bound volumes of classic and Silver Age comics and graphic novels, and the history room, a library time capsule which preserves the collection as it was in the early decades of the twentieth century.

The library sponsers a variety of special presentations, in addition to regular programing for children and adults that includes Baby Story Time on Friday mornings; a knitting group every Wednesday at noon, and a book group the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 P.m.

One of the unique features of the library is a butterfly garden, laid out on the north side of the library. Handsome in all seasons, the garden reaches its peak between June and September. The Butterfly Garden link provides more information.

The library hosts The Top Shelf Gallery, a place where area artists can display their work. Information about current and future shows, as well as submission information for artists is available via the Top Shelf Gallery link.

We are celebrating the Library's Centenary with a free, downloadable history.
